Carrie Turansky Interview On 15, Feb 2018

"Born in the Northwest in Portland, Oregon, author Carrie Turansky moved to suburban New Jersey as an adult. Most of her inspiration comes from doing research, and she hopes that, besides entertainment, her books will challenge and inspire. Thus, she always weaves faith elements into her stories. WaterBrook Multnomah, a division of Penguin Random House, creates the cover designs for all her English historical novels based on her input. Always up to try something new, Carrie is interested in experimenting with dictating the first drafts of her books in the future."
What is a childhood story that you love to tell? What do you love most about your hometown?

I was born in the Northwest, and Portland, Oregon, is my hometown. It’s called the City of Roses, and it’s surrounded by waterfalls, snow- capped mountains, rushing rivers, stunning beaches, and much more. Oregon has it all! When I was a little girl I enjoyed visiting my grandparents who lived on the Oregon coast. My dad would wake me up early and take me clam digging at the beach. It sounds like it would be a cold, muddy activity, but it was great fun, and I loved collecting the clams and bringing them home to my grandmother who would make clam chowder for lunch.

When did you move to New Jersey? Does the noise of the city help or disrupt your writing process?

Most people think New Jersey is all city, but cities only cover a small portion of our state. I live in a beautiful suburban area with a large park and lake directly across the street from our home. I enjoy walking around the lake, watching the birds and fish, and snapping photos of flowers and the pretty lake view. Noise is not a problem for me, and I have several quiet spots around my house where I enjoy writing.

Where do find most of your inspiration? Or when do you feel most inspired to write?

I find most of the inspiration by doing research. My last few books are historical, so that involves doing quite a bit of research to understand the people, events, and setting. I find my characters and their conflicts when I do the research. I can get lost in a tall stack of research books, and I have to discipline myself to stop researching and start writing!

What is the first and foremost reason that you write? What message do you hope to spread with your books?

I hope readers will be entertained by my novels, but I also hope they will be challenged and inspired. My faith is important to me, so I weave faith elements into all my stories. I believe God loves us and has practical wisdom and solutions for the challenges my characters and my readers face. I hope readers will identify with the struggles my characters face and reflect on the choices they make. I want to touch my readers’ hearts with stories of faith and love.

How did you first get the idea for the Edwardian Brides Series? What do you love most about your character, Julia Foster (The Governess of Highland Hall) and how do you relate to her?

I met an editor at a conference and asked her what kind of book she was looking for. Downton Abbey was just becoming popular at that time, and she said she’d like a story set in that same time period in England with a governess for the heroine and a brooding hero, similar to Jane Eyre. I thought that sounded like a great idea. I’d watched a few episodes of Downton, and I enjoyed the upstairs/downstairs cast of characters. So I jumped into the research and fell in love with the Edwardian era.
Julia Foster spent twelve years in India as a missionary, serving with her family, but then has to return to England when her father becomes ill. She takes a job as a governess to help support her family. She has a strong faith, and she is not afraid to speak up to help those she meets at Highland Hall, including the master, Sir William Ramsey. I enjoyed creating Julia’s character and taking her on a journey of self- discovery. I spent time overseas as a missionary, and I can relate to her feelings of returning to her home country and needing to make a new life there. Julie loves children and has sensible ideas about how to raise them. It was fun to include some of my parenting philosophy in the story.

You said Julia Foster was inspired by Amy Carmichael, a missionary to India, but was the hero, Sir William Ramsey, based on any historical figure?

Sir William is a combination of people and not based on any one historical figure. I watched a TV series called Manor House where modern people took on the roles of upstairs and downstairs characters and had to play out their role as they would’ve 100 years ago living in an English manor house. Watching that series helped me picture Sir William and what his life might have been like. He’s also partially inspired by Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre.

Where did you shoot the cover for your book Shine Like the Dawn? How do you usually get the models and costumes required for your historical novel covers? Please briefly explain your process for creating and choose a book cover.

Shine Like the Dawn is published by WaterBrook Multnomah, a division of Penguin Random House. They create the cover designs for all my English historical novels. I am able to give some input about the costumes and models, and I really enjoy that. They hire professional models and rent costumes from theatrical costume companies. I give suggestions for settings too. Then about six months before release they show me several design cover choices and I give feedback. I’ve always been very pleased with the final covers.

What made you decide to revise and update your novella A Shelter in the Storm in A Blue and Gray Christmas and give it the new title, Waiting for His Return? What are you most proud of in this book?

I received my rights back after A Blue and Gray Christmas went out of print. I loved that story and wanted to self-publish it to make it available to new readers. When I was looking for cover ideas I found the beautiful photograph that I used on the cover of the young woman looking out the window. I thought it fit the story perfectly, so that inspired me to re-title the novella for this second release. I’m happy to say this novella was a finalist for the American Christian Fiction Writers Carol Award.

Your novel, Across the Blue, is your most recent publication. What should readers expect from this book, and how is it similar or different than your previous novels?

Across the Blue is similar in that it’s set in England in the early 1900s like the Highland Hall novels and Shine Like the Dawn. It’s a stand- alone novel rather than a series. It features a hero who wants to be the first to fly across the English Channel and a heroine who is an aspiring journalist covering that story. It has the charm of Downton Abbey and the high-flying adventure of the Wright Brothers. I’m excited to share this new story with reading friends. It releases February 20, 2018.

Some of your books (Snowflake Sweethearts, A Man to Trust, ect) have the tag “Love Inspired.” Could you explain what it means and how you chose which stories to write?

Love Inspired is the inspirational division of Harlequin. Love Inspired novels are contemporary inspirational romances that are heartwarming stories usually set in small town America. Seeking His Love, A Man to Trust, and Snowflake Sweethearts are a series of books set in Fairhaven, Washington. Each book has a unique hero and heroine, but there is a group of senior-age friends (secondary characters) who play matchmakers in each story. Since I am from the Northwest, it was fun to write a story set there. I enjoyed writing for Love Inspired earlier in my career, and perhaps I will write for them again in the future.

In a parallel universe, if you weren’t a writer, what would you be doing with your life?

I’d probably own a florist shop and be arranging flowers to brighten peoples’ days and to make events beautiful and memorable. I hope I’d still be married with a big family and be committed to the Lord whatever universe I’m in!

Does writing ever get dull? If so, how do you pick yourself up and find your inspiration again?

If my writing feels dull to me and I’m not wrapped up in the story, then I know something is wrong and I need to take a step back to find out why. Sometimes that means I am making things too easy for my characters and I need to add more conflict. Other times it means I am tired and I need to take a break so I can come back later feeling refreshed. Deadlines are very inspiring and motivating!

What has been one of your most memorable experiences as an author? Do you remember your lowest day and how did you get over it?

One of the most memorable experiences was the call from my agent telling me there were several publishers interested in my Highland Hall novels. I happened to catch the wave of popularity around Downton Abbey, and they were looking for authors who would write inspirational novels that reflected some of the elements of TV series. I’d wanted to write longer historical novels for a traditional publisher, so it was an exciting step forward for me. I’m not sure if I can remember a particular low day, but I faced many rejections before my first novel (Along Came Love) was accepted for publication. I wrote five full novels and a novella before that sale.

What are some new ideas and writing methods you want to experiment with in the future?

I’ve heard a few of my author friends talking about dictating the first drafts of their books. It sounds like an interesting idea, and I may try that in the future.
