      • A good cover is absolutely essential in order to promote your work. The rise of the digital market has caused a boom in the number of self-published books and it is more important than ever to have something visually appealing for a potential reader. The need for a succinct and catchy title is also of fundamental importance. Imagine yourself from the reader's perspective when selecting what to buy.

      • There is no easy answer when it comes to 'writer's block' and its respective challenges. On the one hand, I try to take time to myself and focus on my sources of inspiration. On the other, I try to remain dedicated and avoid procrastination or apathy. I tend to hover somewhere in between with occasional periods of intense productivity.

      • I am first and foremost interested in producing children's books in order to help young readers. Content creation is without a doubt my driving force in terms of literary ambition. However, I am also pragmatic and would like to be in a position where my writing is able to bring in enough passive revenue for me to maintain a decent lifestyle. Financial stability alongside creative freedom would be my definition of success.

      • I have been writing since I was first able to hold a pencil. One of my short stories at the age of 6 was entered into a national competition and I always pursued literary interests growing up. During my late teens through my twenties my writing was academic in nature; I completed a doctorate in 2012 at the University of Edinburgh. After years of trying to pursue an academic career I instead became an independent freelance writer. Altogether I have been writing for about 32 years in one form or another.

      • Make sure to balance alone time with social interaction. It is tempting to lock yourself away, particularly when experiencing feelings of 'impostor syndrome' or general apathy, but discussing your work with other enthusiasts will give you emotional support. The #WritingCommunity on Twitter is full of wonderful individuals who have brightened my outlook during many low moments. There is no easy answer to this question. There is a very unlikely chance you will end up like J.K. Rowling or with your work adapted into a Netflix production. Once you embrace the fact that a career in writing is one of passion with a low chance of 'success', at least in the traditional sense of the word, it becomes easier to maintain a positive point of view.
