Joseph Melnik
BIOGRAPHY

I started this journey on New Years day 2017 at about 5 am. I had dabbled with some writing in college but life took over and it was put aside. With a rough concept and a very sketchy outline I decided to start the process. At first it was a hobby but quickly turned into a drive to finish. I pushed my daily writing word count to 250. It may not seem like much but with three kids and a full time job, the writing always came last. Had my wife not supported me in my quest to finish I might not be at this point. Nonetheless, Three and a half years later I am ready to release my first work.

Joseph Melnik Interview On 17, Jun 2021

"Joseph Melnik grew up in Syracuse, New York. He started his writing journey on New Year's Day in the year 2017 at about 5 AM. He has made a mark in the writing world with his first release, Ascension of Light in the Chronicles of the Endless series. He started several different books that are in a drawer somewhere never finished. He might go back to them one day."
Which city or town did you grow up in?

Syracuse, New York

Do you have a simple childhood memory that you could never forget?

Being grounded and sent to my room where I was only allowed to read..

What did being an author mean to you as a child? What does it mean to you now?

I did not think about it much as a child, just enjoyed stories from various. Now it’s nice to hear that people enjoy mine.

What inspired you to start your journey on New Years day 2017 at about 5 AM?

I have always been serious about New Year's resolutions, and I had a story rattling around for a long time. So I thought I would try and put it down on paper, and what better time than 5am.

What was your first experience with writing in college?

I took a few English classes, a Mythology class, but never a creative writing class. I started several different books that are in a drawer somewhere never finished. I might go back to them one day.

How many books do you plan to write in the Chronicles of the Endless series?

It is at least three. The outline for Book two: The Dark Tide is completed but the story is not. I am also not sure if I can wrap it up in a trilogy, could be four… not really sure, I will let the story decide that.

What challenges did you face writing the novel, Ascension of Light?

Editing, writing it was easy, the story flowed out nicely for me. Going back and re-reading and doing re-writes felt like homework, I never liked homework.

How do you decide upon the perfect book titles?

Ascension of Light took a long time to come up with, I had written 95% of the book and the ending scene before I settled on that one. For Book two: The Dark Tide, that took about 15 minutes after I settled on Ascension.

If you could write about one topic for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Any type of magic or mystical creatures. I loved Narnia for that, as well as Robert Jordan.

When reading a new book, what is one thing that is a surefire way to capture your attention?

I enjoy starting off with a bang, get me straight into the action, you can explain later.

How do you manage writing with three kids and a full time job?

No sleep. I go to bed late and an early riser. I try and write 150-250 words a day, which is hard, but if you stick to that goal you usually end up writing more.

How did your wife support you in your quest to finish the novel?

My wife read the whole book out loud to me, which took the editing process to a whole new level. This process did not come without looks of disapproval from her, but in the end her support and candid feedback really helped shape the book.

Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?

Everyone asks, “When is the next one?” Which has been great except its not even a third written and then we have to go through editing, more homework.

How many plot ideas are just waiting to be written? Can you tell us about one?

This is a tough question; I am what some might call a “discovery writer”. I put down a rough outline, which is hardly followed. Then I let story and the characters take me through it. I will say I am eager to write some background on the main characters, and how their past might change the future.

What do you think of AllAuthor? Has this website been helpful to you?

AllAuthor has been fabulous, I am able to connect with other likeminded individuals as well as show off my book cover in the competition.

      • I saw an Interview with Raymond Feist, who said something to the effect that he never experienced writers block, he just found more important things to do. For me this is a true statement. The remedy is one must make the writing important.
