BIOGRAPHY

Joy Johnston is an award-winning author and journalist based in Atlanta who writes about family caregiving issues. Her first book, The Reluctant Caregiver, received a gold medal at the 2018 Independent Publisher Book Awards. She received the 2015 Rick Bragg Prize for Nonfiction from the Atlanta Writers Club. Her work has been published in Chicken Soup for the Soul and other anthologies. She writes about dementia and caregiving on her award-winning blog, The Memories Project.

When she's not writing she's taking care of her senior dog Murphy and a pair of young tuxedo cats named Serena and Dorian, all adopted from local rescue groups.       • Memoir writing is a particular challenge, because you are often writing about painful memories that can unearth a slew of emotions. It's important to engage in self-care that works for you, and ideally have a support network to lean on during the tough times.

      • I've enjoyed writing since elementary school. I am an introvert, so to counter being the shy kid in school, I would write funny stories.
