About I am Marianne, a Berliner by birth, and English by association: my partner is English. I have always worked as a multilingual PA, in pharmaceuticals back in Germany, then from 2001 in London, first in banking in the City and then for the owners of an art gallery in the Westend before we escaped the London rat-race and moved to the foothills of the French Pyrenees in early 2012.

We bought an old farmhouse and converted it over the years into a gite and B&B. We have three daughters between us, our families are spread across Germany, England and the US. We also have two rescue dogs, Monty and Maddie, that came from a local French refuge where I’m a volunteer.

I always had an inborn wanderlust, and a natural affinity for languages, speaking three and a half: German, English, French and a bit of Spanish. I’m currently learning Portuguese on Duolingo, a challenge I’ve set myself, a bit like writing stories again, haha. I also enjoy baking (especially bread) and cooking vegetarian food.

I have been a passionate reader from childhood, and always loved books and literature. For years I was the best customer at the local library, and got in trouble with my parents more than once for reading until late on a school night, by torch light under the covers! I really enjoyed writing stories and essays until my early twenties, I even considered becoming a journalist at some point, but then life took over and it’s a long time ago that I actively wrote anything for pleasure, I also don’t have as much time for reading than I’d like to.

I don’t have a single favourite book, I like reading all kinds of genres: classic novels, historical fiction, travel stories, crime and fantasy. Recent favourites have been The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, The time traveler's wife by Audrey Nieffenegger and The winter ghosts by Kate Mosse, just to name a few.
