BIOGRAPHY

Michael Jon Lawrence is an author born and raised in south central Texas. Inspired by authors like John Erickson, Cormac McCarthy and St. Augustine, Michael knew that faith, authenticity and humor had to be part of his writing. From a young age he loved the Hank the Cowdog series, frequently writing Erickson about how to become a better writer. Publishing his first book in 2019, The Roadkill Tales: The Legend of Tortilla the Armadillo, a book about a flat armadillo, Michael knew that he really wanted to focus on children’s literature but also pursue Christian Fiction and the Crime Genre as well. I’m 2022, he published his first Novel titled Redemption Day, showing how faith works through his writing as well. Michael plans to write more novels in the future while still make up adventures for Tortilla and his friends.

      • I just want to be a good person. All I want to do is make it to Heaven and bring as many people with me as I can. I think the most satisfying thing for someone to say about me after I pass is that the thought I was a good guy. It’s not the normal goal one would think of, but it’s mine and it’s personal. Be generous, be kind, be humble, pray a lot and don’t worry if your remembered or not. Aspire to be the best version of yourself and love unconditionally.

      • It’s grown quite a bit. My first books were not great, and my stories would run ten different directions, never actually staying linear and finishing the plot. I learned to become more compressive, if that’s even the right way to say it, with my writing. I focus on getting to my end goal. I’m not saying you can’t have side quests here and there. That makes the journey fun, but I needed my writing to flow. I structure my books like I did my college essays when I studied history. Have a thesis statement in your stories. It’s alright to do that in a book, just don’t make them so obvious that you give away the ending.

      • I wouldn’t give anything up. I love writing, so I make time to do it. You shouldn’t have to give anything up to follow your passion. If you are serious, you can make it happen.

      • My problem is self criticism and self doubt. I know I’m a good writer. I don’t say that out or arrogance, but out of humility believe it or not. Sometimes we need to humble ourselves just to admit we have a gift. I wouldn’t publish my work otherwise, but I think I could be more productive with my craft if I didn’t think that everyone would hate a certain piece I wrote. It can be a struggle, believe me.

      • I started writing when I was about eight years old. I would write these short books about two brothers named Pat and Carle, and they would go on funky adventures. There’s a lot of their influence in Tortilla the Armadillo books.

I think Hank the Cowdog and John Erickson are the true reasons I became an author. I looked up to Erickson, and every letter I wrote him, I received a personal letter back. I even have one framed in my kitchen. That’s what really started my journey as a writer.

      • You have to be authentic and write what you know. Coming from a place of empathy will do you more favors in writing than anything else. You work takes on meaning then. Be real, be from the heart and treat every story you write as if you were there with the characters. See what they see and feel what they feel. You can’t go wrong.
