Roslyn Reid Interview On 07, Feb 2022

"Amazon best-selling and award-winning author Roslyn Reid was born in NJ. She was always in the school library. She lives with her corgi, Great Pyrenees, and husband in Downeast Maine. She loves gardening and hiking."
Where were you born and where do you live now? Which place do you like better and why?

I was born in NJ but I live in Maine now. Maine is a much better place for writers because there is so much support for local talent.

Were you an avid reader as a child? Do you still read books?

Yes, I was always in the school library. I still love to read.

How did your friends and family react to your first book?

Some were surprised (& some weren’t), some were thrilled, some didn’t react at all.

What was your biggest dream as a child? Did it ever come true?

I wanted to become a horse. So far it hasn’t.

What inspired the plot of your first mystery, "A Scandal at Crystalline"?

The plot actually came from an episode of the old Alfred Hitchcock Presents show where a woman kills her husband with a frozen leg of lamb & then cooks the evidence & serves it to the cops. I always thought that was quite clever.

How many books do you plan to write in the Early Mystery series?

I have at least 2 more in the pipeline, hopefully to be 3.

Who inspired the character of Dr. Spencer Py in "The Spiricom"?

Nobody, really. I’m a big supporter of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a wheelchair user in the story—it allows me to mention them.

What are some habits that improved the quality of your life significantly?

Joining the Authors Guild was a big help! Also learning to negotiate.

Who are some of the lesser known authors you would recommend people to read?

When I was a teenager I read a lot of scifi, & my favorite author was Frederic Brown. He deserves more attention than he gets.

Do you believe in paranormal activities? Have you ever experienced any paranormal activity?

Oh yes! MY BFF & I once saw a ghost car together. That was probably the creepiest incident.

How has being a member of the Author's Guild helped you in your writing career?

Their website is a vast knowledge base & is full of people ready to help. Even with weird situations you’d think never happened to anybody else.

What are the challenges of being an award-winning author?

So far, only remembering to mention it in my publicity campaigns!

What is the most important stuff when you go hiking?

Know your limits. Don’t go hiking 5 mile trails if you tire easily. Take navigational aids with you, such as a map, GPS, & compass, to keep from getting lost. (Cellphones don’t always work in the woods. And always make sure somebody knows where you are, when you left, & when you expect to be back!

What are you currently working on? May we know when we can expect a new book?

I’m about halfway thru the 3rd book in the Early Mysteries series. I’m also working on a couple of non-Early books & shopping a short story around.

What are your thoughts on AllAuthor? Is this a website you see yourself using for sometime even in the future?

It’s a great alternative to a dedicated author website. I’ve been recommending it as such. The support is fantastic, & I think with a few tweaks it would be perfect.

Dr. Py is my favorite character! It's so unusual to see a disabled character in a mystery, unless they are the villain.

      • Ebooks have made publishing much cheaper & easier. Self-publishing is becoming a respectable way to get the word out. People are less skeptical about the quality of the work.

      • I'm not a terrific fiction writer, so a lot of what's in my mysteries is nonfiction. For instance, the gruesome murder in the first chapter of "A Scandal at Crystalline" is an almost literal recount of an actual case.
