INTRODUCTION

“WHITE LIGHT”—the first fully-interactive ‘HARPER’ universe story—began its life in April of 2019. At inception, it was meant to be a learning experiment for creator Dan Burley to get acquainted with the PlayStation-based game engine/creative suite “Dreams”. The hope was to use it as a proof-of-concept, to form a team to help build a game.

“WHITE LIGHT” is not that game. However, over the past three years, it snowballed from a few character sculptures and test scenes into an hours-long cinematic novel, exploring themes of life, loss, love, hate, and humanity—all presented in a hybrid of classic PC point-and-click games and modern, 3rd person exploration.

STORY

The story of “WHITE LIGHT” takes place on a lonely, rainy December night in Seattle, at a point where private detective Reggie Harper has been living and working there for over 15 years.

Though in the middle of a high-profile investigation, Reggie has tapped out for the night, hoping to catch up on some sleep. Of course, sleep for the decades-active detective isn’t always easy to come by…

PRESENTATION

A dreamy, neo-noir aesthetic looms over the player through Reggie’s contemplative night, as they explore his home and psyche; learning about his life, his many loves and hates—all of the things that truly make him tick.

“WHITE LIGHT” is almost as much an exercise in observation as it is anything else, and there is nothing more important to observe than the light.

Lighting and light direction play an important part in guiding the player, through every portion of the adventure. When in doubt—even when there’s nothing left in sight—always look for the light.

GAMEPLAY

Players explore the world of “WHITE LIGHT” and progress Reggie’s narrative by interacting with objects and their environment.

Explore incomplete crime scenes to find the truth of what happened, and to progress the story.

Things aren’t always quite what they seem in Reggie’s dream space, and every little alteration, no matter how subtle (or not), is important to the overall narrative.

Two distinct game paths, telling two versions of the same story work to give players a complete picture of Reggie and his life...

True or false;
Which path will you take first?
