As my debut work of fiction, this book will always have a special meaning for me.

This charming coming-of-age tale was beautifully written and very well researched.
The orphanage in Marcigliana, where Marie-Claire stayed for a while, actually “initially hosted a women’s college, but after World War II it became a psychiatric hospital, then an orphanage and finally a nursing home, before being abandoned.”
We follow her journey from childhood to womanhood and from extreme poverty to spectacular privilege.
Inspired by the Peter Sarstedt song, this book is a very entertaining read.
