Michael Shotter is an author who has mastered the art of subverting reader expectations to excellent dramatic effect. When you think you've picked up on a particular pattern, it's likely just long enough to find it turned squarely on its head. While Shards is an excellent complement to the larger series, it's refreshing to return directly to the characters of The Big Men and see what happens next.
