I appreciate all reviews. It's great to hear when readers understand and appreciate my stories. Even better when someone is inspired. If a review is negative, I hope the reviewer gives their reasons. Then I can take those into consideration with future books.
As an independent author and publisher, I consider it a success when I finish a book and publish it. There's a lot of time and effort put into that process. Then, the marketing begins, which is totally separate. I haven't achieved bestseller status yet, but I'm learning more about how to promote my books successfully.
I wrote my first novel during the COVID pandemic quarantine period. I felt the need to share my stories about LGBTQ life both before and during the AIDS pandemic. I didn't want those stories to be lost. Now, as LGBTQ rights are being eroded, I want to continue telling stories about my community, to help overcome the bigotry that we face. My latest book is written for the YA (Young Adult) audience because I believe they really need to hear positive messages about what it's like to be LGBTQ today.
Listen to your inner voice and trust it. It's fine to get advice from friends and beta readers, but any author should feel ownership of their stories. Be proud of what you've accomplished and don't be afraid to say so.
