BIOGRAPHY

"Creativity is my life and the belief that everyone is creative. Ideas can change the world. My book is my contribution."

Michael Kryton is the author of “A Brilliant Idea Every 60 Seconds” published by Gildan Media New York.

Professionally, he has been generating ideas and creating all forms of creative communication and programming for over 36 years as a writer, producer, director, musician-composer, and a creative communications consultant. He also continues to perform as a voice talent behind the microphone and a performer on-camera. His collaborative creative approach is a blend of art, science, and instinct.

Originally from Montreal, Michael trained in music and theatre. He studied piano performance and music composition through the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto). His background in theatre includes studies at Concordia University, National Theatre School and the Toronto New School of Theatre. Michael also pursued undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta and the University of Victoria, focusing on English, economics and commerce.

In 1979, Michael began his career as a writer-producer with the OK Radio Group in Northern Alberta. In 1984, he accepted the position as Creative Director at CISN FM Radio in Edmonton, working with the legendary Canadian radio personality, Bob McCord. Within 2 years, Michael was one of the first in the Canadian radio industry to wear 2 hats simultaneously as both Creative Director and Production Manager.

In 1988, a chance encounter with a growing consumer electronics chain (originally Krazy Krazy’s) led to a contract as a national, television spokesperson. Subsequently, in 4 years, he became a household face in Canada and famous for his notorious antics on camera, doing everything from performing hard-sell commercials while playing rock ‘n roll piano and guitar to the execution of twists of reality that became the stuff of discussion for media pundits across the country. He eventually became Director Of Communications for the 54-store chain.

By 1996, Michael had established his own media studio and expanded his work to include corporate videos, music and jingle production, radio features and television production. He was the first producer in Alberta to create an infomercial entertainment program with Chuck Chandler, one of the original booth announcers for Monty Hall, and his long time friend and creative associate, Keith James, better known as “Mr. Voice”, and currently an imaging voice, narrator and commercial announcer in high demand internationally (www.soundspark.com).

In 2001, Michael accepted an invitation to join “The Idea Factory” as Creative Director of the Alberta based, independent television production company. Within the first year, he had penned his first major documentary, a Life and Times doc for CBC Television on Jean Pare, the best selling Canadian author of the Company’s Coming book series.

In 2005, he was approached by the OK Radio Group once again to head up a unique project, supplying out-sourced commercial production for their retail clients. By the end of the year, he had won Best Radio Campaign and Best of Show as the overall winning advertising campaign (regardless of medium) in Edmonton.

In 2007, entrepreneur Clarence Shields approached him to write the 3rd book in the national best-selling Bachelors Guide series, which has sold over 300,000 copies.

In 2009, Michael joined AXE Productions (now Production World) as Creative Director.

In 2011, Michael accepted a contract with Trixstar Productions to write and direct “How Time Flies: An Evening With WIlliam Shatner” – Canadian Tour 2011.

In 2013, Michael was tapped by the Chamber of Commerce as Executive Producer for the tribute to outgoing Mayor, Stephen Mandel, and subsequently recruited as Executive Producer by the Rotary Club of Edmonton to produce the Rotary Roast for Stephen and Lynn Mandel. He also wrote and directed the Edmonton Chamber Ball featuring the Broadway sensation, Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles.

In 2015, he signed a publishing deal with Gildan Media New York. He is represented by his literary agent, Dan Strutzel (Inspire Productions, Chicago).

He continues to write, produce, direct and voice various campaigns in radio and television.

He lives in Edmonton, and has 4 children: Brock, Cole, Caleb and Hope. He is engaged to his Fiance, Janet Toews.

Michael Kryton Interview On 29, Jan 2018

"Even as a child, Michael Kryton was always creatively focused and wanted a career in the arts, whether it was acting or writing. In a movie about himself, Michael says he would have suggested a younger Dustin Hoffman. He has even worked with William Shatner which he describes as “demanding and fun". The hardest lesson he’s learned is to always stick to your dreams when others don't share in your belief. In the future, Michael wants to continue to explore. He’s even started an online art gallery, PIXONIMAGES.com, and says that “the more I know, the more I embrace the vastness of my own ignorance”."
If you could compare your childhood to any movie or TV show, what would it be and why? Who would play you in a movie about your life?

I remember seeing the Beatles "Hard Day's Night" as a child with my older sister. I was fascinated by the chaos and humour. In a movie about me, I would have suggested a younger Dustin Hoffman. He could play me now.

As a kid, I would change my career plans every month or so. Was it the same for you or have you always known what you wanted to do?

I have always been creatively focused. Originally, I wanted to be an actor. I fell into communications and writing when I landed a job as a copywriter at a radio station.

Having been a writer, producer, director, musician-composer, a creative communications consultant, and now a writer, what is the most fun you've ever had at any one of these jobs?

Working with William Shatner was, at once, demanding and fun. We were very similar in our creative process.

When you think back on your life, what do you think is the most unbelievable thing you've done? Or, what have you accomplished so far that you never thought you would when you were, say, 10 years old?

Two things. Working with Shatner and writing a book that was published out of New York.

Why did you decide to write "A Brilliant Idea Every 60 Seconds"?

Over the years, many people have said to me that they did not feel they were creative. I was compelled to show them a process to help them unleash their creativity, because I believe everyone IS creative. They just put filters and obstacles in the way.

What is the hardest lesson you've ever learnt?

It is always a challenge to stick to your dreams when others don't share in your belief.

Did you interview anyone for your book "A Brilliant Idea Every 60 Seconds"? If so, could you tell us about some of the interesting people you met? If not, how else did you conduct your research for this book?

My book is based on my experience. But it is the cumulative result of working with many creative people over many years.

Why do you think people write self-help books? What are some self-help books that you really enjoyed?

I think that people who are passionate about their work and philosophy about what they do are compelled to write about it and share their knowledge. I have enjoyed Tony Robbins, Stephen Covey, Earl Nightingale, Zig Ziglar, Deepak Chopra, Reis and Trout ... among many others.

What is the best reader review you've received for your book? Do you think you've been able to accomplish all the goals you set for yourself with this book?

Each review is distinct. I appreciate each one.

How were you first offered your job as a writer-producer at OK Radio Group in Northern Alberta in 1979? In what ways did this job help lift off your career?

It was a happenstance. I knew the station manager and she knew me through my projects in the community on the local cable TV channel and theatre. She said to me, "I know a lot about you and I know nothing about you. I have a job you might be interested in"

Tell us about your most memorable day working at Krazy Krazy’s in 1988.

The television commercials we rodeuced were something out of Saturday Night Live. They were crazy and whacky. We pushed humour and slapstick to the limits.

What do your four children and partner think of your book (if they've read it)? What is one thing you hope for your kids, as a parent?

I'd like to think they are proud and inspired of my realization of a dream. They are all keenly aware of creativity. My hope is that they take the lessons and philosophies in the book and maximize their own creative natures.

What are some of your plans for the future? Do you plan to write more (perhaps some fiction as well) or will you try your hand at something new?

I continue to explore. I started an online art gallery, PIXONIMAGES.com. I always engage with others about their dreams and quests. I am a creative explorer. The more I know, the more I embrace the vastness of my own ignorance.
