What are some of your favorite childhood memories?
Going out to the ranch I boarded my horse at and riding horses with friends were definitely some of my favorite memories. Taking the horses on trail rides and exploring was a lot of fun.
Do you remember the first fiction you wrote at the age of four?
Yes, I actually still have it. It's about a girl living on a horse ranch with her family.
How was Turbo Kitten Industries™ started?
When I began self-publishing and creating items to sell on Etsy, I knew I needed to come up with a business name. Since Avery is a huge part of my business, it only seemed right to include him. So, we combined our gamer tags into our business name. Sadly, Turbo Cat was already trademarked, so we went with Turbo Kitten.
How did you discover that you wanted to be a writer?
I've always loved coming up with fun stories, so it was only natural.
What inspired the plot of your first full-length novel at the age of fifteen?
At the time, Ann Rice and vampires were really popular, but I wasn't much of a vampire fan. I loved werewolves and since there weren't any paranormal romances out about them, I started writing my own. I've also always loved mythology, so I added some Greek mythology in as well.
How did you come up with the character of Tilia Swanson in "Pirate Princess"?
The idea of a girl who was raised by pirates but actually a princess to a land nation came to me while thinking about the duality of some lives.
What is the first video game you remember playing?
Super Mario Bros. We played it all the time at my grandparents, all of the grandkids taking turns trying to get through the levels.
Do you, as a fantasy writer, first create their world, or their story?
It depends on the story. Sometimes, I have an idea for a world and other times I think of a character and write them going about their life to figure out the worls.
Where did you meet your soulmate and best friend, Avery?
My best friend at the time had just started dating his cousin, who Avery lived with. Avery asked if she had any single friends and we set up a date to meet. The rest is history :)
For fantasy-fiction writers, how would you recommend starting the first chapter of a first book in a long series?
Start with a great hook, but make sure it doesn't require a lot of backstory or explanation afterwards as that drives many readers away.
What advice would you give to an aspiring fantasy writer?
Ignore any naysayers and write the book you want to write. Never give up.
What does it require to become a bestselling author?
Advertising, a good blurb, a great cover, and a lot of luck.
Which is the best compliment or fan-mail you have received for your work?
A fan's daughter sent me a colored page of cats because she knew I was her mom's favorite author and wanted to send me something.
Which is the next book you are working on? Is it a series or a stand-alone book?
I'm working on the sequels to A Demon's Heart and Accidental Mobster as well as a new standalone book that I think a lot of people will enjoy.
