Your bio hints at finding inspiration in unexpected places, even the grocer’s cold case! Can you share the strangest thing that has sparked a story idea?
I’d say that nipping into the grocers cold case while we were having a heat wave is probably the most interesting place. I’ve thought of a story. The other place could be while walking a treadmill at a local gym. I decided to make a treadmill wear a DJINN inhabits it and makes love to The person every time she’s walking on it. Makes weight loss worthy.
What draws you to writing about the unusual and twisted? Have you always had a taste for the dark and mysterious?
100% yes. I used to cut the heads off my Barbies and sneak watching the old dark shadows when my mom wasn’t looking. I like the dark and the mcabre.
Do you ever scare yourself with your own writing? Has a plot or character ever unsettled you?
Yes. But really only once there was a scene that called for a racial slur from some idiots to a police officer, and I couldn’t write it. Just couldn’t do it couldn’t use the racial slurs. I figured out a way around it.
Are there any real-life mysteries or cold cases that have influenced your stories?
In my new adult series, “a fine collection of sins” writing as Goshen Hexx the history of my local area’s coal mining industry brought about a two book series soon to be a three book series. My grandfather actually worked in the coal mines underneath the school I retired from. in the 1930s he brought home a human skull. Weird things happen down there.
What’s your writing routine like? Do you embrace chaos, or do you have a structured process?
I like to embrace chaos in the mornings. Even though I’m retired now I still wake up early and I find that’s the best time to write.
Your stories often explore the bizarre—do you have a favorite character who embodies that best?
Oh goodness, gracious I have so many characters that I love. How about the orca King, himself. Baker from a fine collection of sins and Adanto from “claimed by the djinn.”
How do you balance the eerie and the entertaining in your storytelling?
There is a balance?
What was the most challenging part of writing the book, “Stained & Cursed”?
Stained and cursed is based upon my life prior to meeting my current husband Of 34 years. I had a horrible relationship before him and it took me a long time to be able down the incident in a fictional form for the book. I’m actually very proud of this book because the MC’s just tell it like it is and take charge of their lives.
Are there any topics or themes too disturbing for you to explore in your book, “A Fine Collection of Sins Book One: Under the Witch's Cap”?
I’ve kind of touched on a lot of very very bad things in this series, including child, slavery and bad men doing bad things too far under age, children, and using babies as canaries in the coal mine. I’m trying not to pull any punches.
If your writing had a theme song, what would it be?
Processional to the mountain of power from the 1982 movie Conan the barbarian score composed by Basil Poledouris.
Do you believe in the supernatural? Have you ever had an experience that influenced your work?
Yes, I believe in the supernatural. I’m a professional tarot reader here locally and my mother was also a professional psychic. I grew up understanding there was more than what we could see with our eyes.
What’s a book or movie that perfectly aligns with your love for the unusual?
Obviously, I’m very fond of the 1982 Conan the barbarian movie, but I am also very fond of Star Trek. Star Trek anything. Any incarnation of Star Trek.
What’s the most surprising reaction you’ve ever gotten from a reader about your work?
They sent me flowers.
Do you have any plans for future books or new series, and if so, what can readers expect next from you?
I’m working on the third book and a fine collection of sins right now and I have two other books lined up to go when I’m done with that.
How has been your experience working with AllAuthor?
Allauthor is pretty darn sharp and great to work with.
