The Secret Lives of the Doyenne of Disbrook begins as a light-hearted murder mystery with a classic feel. Set in a picturesque English countryside village populated by the arty, wealthy, quintessentially upper-middle-class residents, I thought I had the book sussed. And yet things are definitely not what they seem in Didsbrook! As the book went on, more and more scandalous behaviour was revealed, showing the characters to be less predictable – and the cast more diverse – than one might assume.

When a wealthy and famous ex-actress-turned-novelist dies, the police consider but dismiss grounds to investigate murder. But Jocelyn’s protegee, Lucy, struggles to accept that her mentor would have died by suicide. Lucy spends some time uncovering the (many) secrets in Jocelyn’s life, and with this come a range of suspects – for her, and us as readers. Were the police right to think it an open-and-shut case?

There are some lovely descriptions as the book goes on (‘… They were like feral kittens, scampering over the unspoilt landscape, climbing trees…’ and ‘Umbrellas popped up like mushrooms in a timelapse film’ to name but two!) and I enjoyed getting to know the village and its residents. Lucy, especially, is a relatable and likeable protagonist, though I was also intrigued by some of the other (surprisingly ‘badly’ behaved!) characters. Towards the end of the book, Tom quips: ‘We were all a bit like Fleetwood Mac.’ I couldn’t have put it better myself.

Overall, an enjoyable, light read with a few raucous moments and a satisfying ending.
