As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
A writer, a singer and an actor. The holy trinity lol.
At what age did you begin writing your first story? What was it about?
6. I used to tell my little brother stories about the adventures of two mice on our drive to school. Although the first story I actually penned was around the same time, and I believe was a haunted house story, but I don't really remember the details.
Who is the most supportive person in your life when it comes to your writing?
My best friend, and fellow indie author, Jade Hamilton. She is the first reader for almost everything I write.
How did you begin your career as a mature young adult fantasy and magical realism author?
I guess that depends on what you mean by 'career' lol. I managed to get a pretty loyal, if small, following for my fanfics, which were the practice ground for my current style, and a lot of the unique ideas and story elements I use. But self publishing with KDP over the last years has started me down the path towards making writing a career.
How has graduating with a degree in Creative Writing and Drama helped you in your writing career?
My degree gave me a really good understanding of my own style, the different ways in which someone can get books out there, and all in all felt like the perfect writing apprenticeship.
What challenges did you face during the release of Echoe through Lulu self-publishing after a brief pause?
The publishing process with Lulu was about as straight forward as KDPs process. Unfortunately it doesn't have the same opportunities for getting interest in your book as KDP does, such as free book promos.
How many books do you plan to write in The Neva Aton Collection?
There will be four books in total, designed to be read in any order, although there is definitely a timeline. The Collection does have a couple of spinoff serieses now though, ones that complement the original four books, whilst doing their own thing. My biggest challenge is and has always been marketing.
How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?
Less the process of writing, I've written every day for the last 15 years. What its altered is my formatting, and editing process. My chapters are longer, and written with ebook formatting in mind.
How did you come up with the character of Obin, a Demon Hunter in "Broken Before Use"?
So, okay, I wrote this seroes of stories for a forum I was on, for the forum users, using their screen names for the characters' names. Obin was an original child character I created for onr of these characters, and once I was done with that forum stories, I was like, 'huh, I wonder what comes next'. I actually wrote the second book, Welcome to Mary's Vail first, then realised Obin had backstory that needed fleshing out.
What kind of audience do you hope to appeal to with your books?
Mature young adults (16+) who like character driven stories where magic plays a part, but isn't always the main focus.
What is the most hilarious thing you did out of boredom, apart from writing?
Define hilarious lol. Um, I don't really have an answer to this one.
If you could improve one thing about your writing, what would it be and why?
I'm not sure. I'm always looking for ways to tighten my writing up and develop it further. So there's really not one thing, more a constant process.
What common mistakes do female writers make when writing about male characters?
I don't know. But as someone with a nonbinary sense of gender, I tend to treat all characters as personalities first, and everything else after.
Are you working on a new book? Is it going to be a series or a standalone?
I'm currently writing two books. One is part of one of the spin off series of The Neva Aton Collection, the other part of the same series as The Doll Maker's Son books. I am also editing two other books, one being the last part of The Neva Aton Collection.
How has your experience of being associated with AllAuthor been?
Pretty good, I like using various features, particularly the auto tweet feature. Although I would like the option of listing my gender as nonbinary or other.
