My passion is the thriving of humanity, for everyone to find the path of their full potential. Thus, my fiction contains many "secrets" on how to tap those potentials and walk a path of self-empowerment, all set against a backdrop of epic story.

Where have you spent most of your childhood?

In and around the Salt Lake City area.

Who introduced you to the world of books?

Our family on my mother’s side consists of scholars, writers, inventors, genius types, and my mother is to this day the most avid reader I’ve ever known, so I was born into it.

Can you tell us about your business background and how you got started in this industry?

I’ve been an entrepreneur for 30 years, in various online businesses, but in terms of creative writing, I just wanted to write, and started doing it in the mid-‘80s.

How did you get interested in writing, and what motivated you to pursue it as a career?

It’s in my DNA, and I crave it. If a career comes of it, all the better, but a group of us are just as focused on launching a content creation juggernaut, producing creative material for every conceivable delivery system.

Can you describe your writing process? How do you generate ideas and turn them into finished pieces?

I’m not a follower of templates, and so for me it’s not a paint-by-number process. It’s more like a blank canvas, with pieces and parts that have to be placed in a way that is intriguing, clear and cohesive. For me, it starts with the main character. Usually what fiction writers do is to place a character into the milieu in which the story is told, while I develop the character, who then becomes the story. I have endless ideas, no generation required, and a lot to say, and so getting down what must be in the work is the first step for me, then building the ways to say it in circumstantial scenes, writing storyboard-like scenes, arranging those scenes, and then writing to see what ideas, connections, additions, etc., come from the writing process itself.

What are some of the challenges you faced when you first started writing?

Same as it ever was: learning how to do it correctly and training myself to the habits of good writing, making it second nature. There is a subtle difference in a string of words which tell, versus a string of words which show. It’s like the difference between active and passive voices. To those who can see it, it’s not subtle, but a stark contrast, and increasingly so the better one gets at it.

How did you come up with the idea for your book, Mythion: Discontinuity in Time?

I knew I wanted to say something about Saturn, as it contains a great deal of secret “lore” as an archetype throughout the ages. It presented a fertile opportunity to express ideas that not so many people have been exposed to. I like mindbenders, and the best involve time loops, and since Saturn is Father Time…well…there you have it.

How did you come up with the title of your debut novel? Did it change at any point during the writing process?

It changed many times. The title didn’t come to me until the last few pages of the book, and then it fell into place.

Is there any symbolism or deeper meaning behind the title of your book, Mythion that readers might not immediately pick up on?

That all realities are myths, and all myths realities.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start writing later in life?

The same as with at any stage of one’s life. Get Strunk & White’s “Elements of Style” and make it your bible. Find out the literary imperatives, such as anagnorisis, objective correlative, scene structure, etc., and habituate to those. Understand that novel length fiction isn’t about being a good writer, but about being a good story builder, and then storyteller. Everything you write…does it translate to the screen? In other words, how many times do you use the words, he thought? Like, I’m going to run now, he thought. On the screen, we don’t have the advantage of being inside someone’s head, and so you’re going to have to come up with another way of showing, and not telling. In doing that, you’re more or less forcing yourself to stick with literary imperatives, and in doing that utilizing psychological hacks to help paint pictures in your reader’s mind in much more evocative ways.

Looking back on your career, what are you most proud of, and what are your future goals as a writer?

Just finishing Mythion was a monumental victory. As for the future, our creative collective is going to be writing novels, screenplays, VR games, tabletop RPG games…basically just building the world that is the alternate reality used in Mythion.

How do you stay motivated and productive as a writer, especially during times when inspiration is hard to come by?

I love it, to start with. It’s so gratifying. There were times when I couldn’t wait to get back to it. For me, it’s again about constructing a story, and so a need arises to say something, now brainstorm with friends or loved ones on how to present it in a given scene. It’s fun for the whole family!

What role do you think writing plays in society, and why do you believe it's important?

I think you must be meaning to say “books” and other published works, because there are a lot of writers whose work never see the light of day. I’m not even sure how to answer the first part of the question, because writing is embedded in every phase of society. Without it, you have nothing.

Which is the next book you are writing? What is it about?

It’s a sort of sequel to Mythion, and again further builds the alternate reality introduced in it.
