"Author James Lively grew up in Dallas, Texas. His experience as a corporate attorney inspired his first original story. His ideal setting is to write in his small study while listening to ambient music. He received the 2016 Merrimack Media Outstanding Writer Award for his second novel, Punitive Damages."
Which city or town did you grow up in?

Dallas, Texas

Which of your childhood dreams was the first to die?

My dream of playing basketball in college.

Were you an avid reader as a child? Do you still read books?

No, I was not an avid reader as a child.

Yes.

Is it better to self-publish or find a publisher for first-time authors?

In my opinion, it is best to try and find a indie publisher rather than self-publish. I have done both.

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

Character development and story line.

What inspired your first original story? Did you share the tale with anyone?

My experience as a corporate attorney.

Yes, I self-published it.

What kind of impression do you hope your books will leave?

I want the reader to be entertained and happy that they chose to read my book.

Do you remember the first character that came floating in your head?

I was my first character, so it was written in first person.

How did you come up with the idea for your book, Arbitrary and Capricious?

Arbitrary and Capricious is a legal term and came up in the context of the book.

What is your ideal setting to write in?

My ideal setting is to write in my small study while listening to ambient music.

Who is the most supportive person in your life when it comes to your writing?

My girlfriend, Paulette and her dog, Monti.

How did you manage writing a novel with a 9-5?

I did not start writing until I transitioned from practicing law into a life of writing, painting and making experimental short films.

Do you encounter writer's block often?

I experience procrastination more than writer's block.

How many plot ideas are just waiting to be written? Can you tell us about one?

I have one at the moment and I am about halfway through the first draft of a new novel.

This is the darkest novel that I have ever written. I wanted to break out of my comfort zone. The protagonist is a young attorney who suffers from some severe psychological issues.

What do you think of AllAuthor? Has this website been helpful to you?

I appreciate AllAuthor and their help promoting my novels.

Yes.
