Liz Butcher Interview On 10, Dec 2019

"Australian author Liz Butcher made an impressive novel debut with FATES’ FURY. She loves to research topics as part of the plotting/planning stage. Her writing is excellent with lively descriptions and crisp action. She earned her degree in psychology, has an insatiable fascination for learning, and has written short stories that have been published in several excellent anthologies."
Where were you born and brought up?

Australian born and bred!

How did you start writing? What inspired you?

I've always loved writing, but started pursuing it seriously in 2015. I'd toyed with the concept of Fates' Fury for awhile and decided I had to write it.

How do you think being a self-confessed nerd with a BA in psychology has helped you shape into a writer?

The nerdism is great for the research part of writing. I love to research topics as part of the plotting/planning stage, while the psychology degree plays a huge role in character development and motivation.

What are some things to keep in mind while planning for a road trip?

Always, and I mean always, have an epic play list--music is key! Have your phone/camera on hand for random photos and bring along some knitting for those idle hands. I'm one of those sad people who get car sick if I read in the car...

Which is your all-time favorite fantasy novel? How difficult it is to write fantasy novels?

Hmm, I love Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell--and of course the Harry Potter series! I think writing fantasy can be as difficult or as simple as you make it. Fates' Fury is set in modern times, so writing that is a simpler format than say, Sunrise, another book I'm working on where I'm creating another world.

Fates' Fury is a wonderful and interesting title for the book and the stories it tells. How was it created?

It was a work in progress! It was originally Tablet of Destinies, then it was called Fates' Revenge, and finally Fates' Fury felt like the perfect fit.

Who inspired the character of Jonah Sands in "Fates' Fury"?

The character of Jonah was inspired by a real life Jonah. He was an amazing child with disabilities that I used to care for. A truly beautiful soul. So when I set out to create my hero, there was no doubt that I'd name him Jonah.

When planning out a new book, what are some plot lines you lay down first before you do anything?

It really depends on how developed the concept is in its raw form. Sometimes the idea is more central to the story so I start in the middle and flesh out either side. Sometimes the idea is the beginning of the story so I work forward. It changes all the time.

What was your inspiration behind writing ‘After Dark’?

After Dark is a collection of short stories and drabbles so the inspirations come from numerous sources. Some of them are writing prompts, some were from specific themes I was given, and others just ideas from the dark depth of my imagination!

What is your one mantra to get through everything in life? What keeps you motivated to write?

Dory says it best, "Just keep swimming" As for my motivation, it's what I love to do so I'm motivated to write as much as I can, whenever I can. It's not always easy with a day job and a little family, but I make the most of the time I do get.

How have negative and positive reviews helped you to write better?

I've been fortunate enough so far that I haven't really garnered any negativity, but when I do I'll just take from it what I can. I'm all for constructive criticism and feedback, it helps us improve.

How important do you think book covers are? Who usually designs your book covers?

I know the saying is, "Don't judge a book by its cover" but the truth is, we ALL do. A fantastic cover is essential and absolutely worth putting time and thought into it. I'm fortunate in that my talented hubby designs mine for me!

Do you think someone can be an author without having discipline? Why or why not?

Nope. Writing is all about discipline and without it, we'd never get any work done!

How were you introduced to AllAuthor? Has this website met all your expectations?

A writing buddy recommended it, and I love it! Such a wonderful site.
