Where were you born, and what was your childhood like?
Born in Santa Monica, but raised in Humboldt County since I was 9 months old, so I grew up with the Pacific Ocean and the Redwoods. Grew up on a horse ranch. Both parents were supportive and loving. Not ‘Father Knows Best’ or ‘Leave it to Beaver’ type, but still very supportive. Christmas was always Special as were birthdays. Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s was great. Didn’t really know how great until I was helping my grandchildren grow up.
What have been your most valuable out-of-school learning experiences?
That is a very difficult question. There have been so many. Everything from work experiences, education, and life experiences, some of which I cannot and will not talk about.
Do you read books every day?
Generally, yes. There are some days when I don’t pick up a book, but that’s pretty seldom.
What inspired your first original story? Did you share the tale with anyone?
A combination of “Star Wars” and my imagination as I wandered around a lumber mill late at night as a security guard. I’d look up at the stars and wonder ‘What if?’ I had the first 4 chapters written in my head for months before sitting down to the typewriter. And yes, it was done on a typewriter.
Who all are a part of your family? How critical are they of your writing?
My wife Janice is the main person. She encouraged me to write the novel.
In fact, she practically read over my shoulder as I was writing and was always anxious for the next chapter. My daughters, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren are also a big part of my family.
How much did you research while writing your novel, “The Soryabus Alliance?”
Tough one. A lot of the information was my own knowledge from my life experiences and training. Some of it was garnered from people I know.
Who inspired the character of Dan Riles, a Vietnam combat veteran?
That is a person I know well and he wishes to remain anonymous. I respect his wishes.
What do you enjoy the most about writing science fiction?
All the ‘what if’ possibilities. The future holds a lot of potential.
What is the one piece of advice you would like to give to young writers in the world?
Don’t give up. I hit ‘writer’s block’ a couple of times and had to stop and wait for more inspiration.
And do not be afraid to rewrite. I had a couple of friends read over the manuscript and they suggested changes that really helped the story.
What's one thing you're really proud of?
Honestly, I’m proud of my wife of 44 years, my daughters, granddaughters, and great grandchildren.
How do you get the ideas for your stories? Do you like to follow a structured and planned storyline or just follow an idea and see where it goes?
I have a story line laid out, but then the story just leads it’s own life, Some of the plot twists just occurred as the ‘plot thickened’ – pun intended.
Do you think it is possible for someone to be a good author without first having a lot of imagination?
Only for non-fiction. If it’s fiction, I feel you need a good imagination.
What do you enjoy reading the most?
SciFi and Fantasy. Also enjoy adventure/spy novels.
Which is the next book that you are writing? When is it due for release?
The next novel is a sequel to my first one. It’s called ‘When the Shalandaar Glows’. Due for release when I find a new Agent to represent me.
How has your experience with AllAuthor been?
It’s been interesting. Not quite what I expected, but interesting.
