Chronicles of Our Blackest Days
by josef mathewsPoetry Book Overview
Chronicles of Our Blackest Days is a brutal, unflinching descent through war, grief, myth, and American ruin — a three‑act odyssey that drags the reader from the edge of apocalypse into the marrow of human defiance. Joe Mathews writes with a voice forged in fire: cinematic, feral, and painfully honest. Across Acts I–III, the collection confronts the ghosts of conflict, the violence of memory, and the collapse of the world we thought we knew. Later pieces explode into punk‑born rebellion, existential clarity, and the raw ache of survival. This is poetry that doesn’t whisper — it burns. Themes War, collapse, and aftermath Mythic violence and deliverance American decay and cultural grief Punk adolescence and self‑destruction Memory, trauma, and reclamation Defiance, identity, and rebirth Why readers connect Chronicles speaks to anyone who’s lived through chaos and came out carrying scars. It’s for readers who crave poetry with teeth — work that doesn’t sanitize pain, doesn’t apologize for anger, and doesn’t pretend the world is softer than it is. Author Note This collection was written across years of upheaval, loss, and clarity. It’s not a eulogy — it’s a record. A ledger of the blackest days and the strange beauty that survived them.
