Before Bud Lomax started calling Bull Cave a "health mine" and opened it up for business, I never put much stock in the stories folks told about the place. Like Mama used to say, if people want a good story, like as not they can make one up.
One was about how that cave was where little Helen McCarthy disappeared to, some years before Mama was born. Not many believed it, because how could a little kid have walked all that way up the canyon from town? But that's what I thought of when I saw her, just standing there all of a sudden, dressed in an old-fashioned dress, hair done up in a braid. Smiling that big, bright smile. She looked to be about five years old.
You know how all the little hairs on your arms will stand up sometimes?

BIOGRAPHY I was born in California, have lived in Washington State, Indiana, Montana, and numerous fictional states, worlds, and universes. I'm married to my one true love.
My short stories, novels, and novellas range from the possible to the weird. I am a careful proofreader. I love the fiction of Octavia E. Butler, Stephen King, C. J. Cherryh, Patricia Briggs, Ursula K. LeGuin, and of course many others too numerous to mention. I was once an English teacher, but don't let that scare you.
