Of Grief And Growing Up: An Anthology of Poetry

Though most of my poetry found its inspiration in the first four stages of loss, which will be subsequently noted, I think the most important aspects of our lives are engendered by our embrace of its fifth and final stage: acceptance. The two central themes to my chronological compilation are by far the most difficult experiences I have faced, whether my sense of loss was a more abstract idea or a physical loss brought on by Inflammatory Bowel Disease. However, in many ways, grief and growing up emphasize our greatest accomplishments in life. After all, love and health are our greatest treasures. My own loss has followed a pattern of healing in my life, as I battled first one, then three autoimmune diseases over the course of nearly three decades. Though I understand that I will never truly be well, I have endeavored to live, and that in itself is a sense of grief that I try to accept. Were it not for my amazing family and friends, and especially my husband, I would lose myself.
