Memory Island: The Future of Your World Is In The Machines?
by Diego AntoliniPublish: Apr 18, 2022Literary Fiction Book Overview
David is a young man who finds himself on an island in the middle of the ocean. He doesn't remember how he got there and, through encounters with people and events bordering the supernatural, he understands that the island is actually a dimensional bubble isolated from Time and Space. Most of what he sees comes directly from his subconscious, and his consciousness is eventually brought to an understanding of his mission: to stop the spread of the Communitrons before they take over human consciousness. The Communitrons are machines that can control the minds of their pilots (Communauts), evolving into sentient Homo Machina while leaving humans as empty shells or mindless humanoids.
David manages to leave the Island and to return to his reality with the help of Adam, a Commonaut, and resumes his role as a volunteer in a futuristic version of the Red Cross. The world David has returned to is a huge radioactive wasteland in which some fortified megacities contain the remnants of a slowly dying technological human society.
During a rescue mission in the Central Asian desert, David meets a woman, Lucy, who holds the keys to understanding the island, the Communitrons and the future of human civilization.
Through a dimensional warp, David meets the scientist who masterminded the plan that is destroying humanity. Lucy is the Alpha Mater, the Professor's ultimate experiment and the first Communitron that evolved by taking the mind, shape and emotions of a human. There's only one way to break the seemingly endless spiral of Communitrons located around the globe, but is that a sacrifice David is willing to accept?
