by Mr. Michael J. Urban 1Publish: Feb 17, 2023Series: Saddlebag JournalsAction & Adventure Historical Fiction Book Overview
This historically correct and truly amazing story is from the continuing journal entries of the fictional newspaper reporter James Michael Urbaniak. Again, the histories in this work are true going back in the past eight generations of the Dodd Family with their pursuit of the American Dream and happiness. This story is Book 2 in the Saddlebag Series Leaven-worth City. The Alma Dodd Story is a story spoken through four different perspectives.
The Author begins our story reading from the journals (that are discovered in the first book, “Leavenworth City”).from the last days of the year 1899 in Leavenworth, Kansas where our storyteller scribes a tale from a family that survived the hardships and heartbreaks in the early days of emigration into the United States. The Dodd and Chick Family is the tale of two families that immigrated to America in the 1850’s with The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-day Saint from Liverpool, England. The author returns to his home to read the journals, to the pleasure of his friends and family.
James Michael Urbaniak (fictional character) is a soon to be retiring journalist who is writing his last big story for his newspaper before his retirement. This novel begins as the author of this novel in present time departs Leavenworth, Kansas
Elizabeth Dodd tells the story of The Dodd Family who crossed America with the Martin Handcart Company in 1856. This expedition considered one of the worst tragedies in early American history with the many deaths during the migration and crossing of the Mormon’s with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint across the United States by foot.
George Chick describes the Chick Family Story. A member of the Abraham Smoot Company and witness to the Saluda incident on the Missouri River in 1852.Eventually, in 1857, the Dodd/Chick Family decided to leave Zion after more despair made them desire to leave their heavenly home, and so they left Salt Lake City settling in Good Intent (Atchison), Kansas during the spring of 1858. The fictitious interview with the Dodd Family members in this journal entry covers the actual true researched and documented trials and tribulations of the Thomas Dodd Family from Liverpool, England to settling in Leavenworth, Kansas.
Here are the historical true-life stories of Thomas Dodd and George Chick taken from journals that they are mentioned written by many of the survivors of both of their journeys. One adventure was by wagon train with the Abraham Smoot Company 1852, and the other by foot with The Martin Handcart Company of 1856. I followed the stories of the families until the current date of this publishing.
