Avery is only surviving on his family name and second chances as he was caught in a romance with the previous purchased breeder and was ordered to execute her by his own hand to prove he was not part of the resistance himself. Full of self loathing and struggling to come to grips with his cowardly mistake, he is bitter and resentful and only knows how to take it out on Cordelia. The only problem is that as bad as Avery treats her...his wife is even worse. When faced with the decision of a poison dinner and who should ultimately receive the meal, Cordelia makes the bold decision to spare Avery’s life despite his abuse and send his wife to her grave. This stunning and merciful act, going against even the wishes of the resistance itself, sets Avery on the right path. Together, he and Cordelia join forces in order to take down the leader, collapse the elites, and prop Avery back to power.
