The Long and Winding Road

The collapse of civilized society after a limited nuclear holocaust was shockingly swift; artificial suns bloomed above major cities and military bases, creating a short-lived, man-made winter that rapidly devastated the world. The first year was the worst—radiation sickness, diseases old and new, mass starvations, and unbelievable savagery. While many hundreds of millions died instantly, billions wished they had; mankind had put itself on the endangered species list with a vengeance. Still, life went on. Now, a handful of years later, survivors huddle in the ruins and behind walls, ignorant of what is happening beyond their limited horizons. Yet there are a few who choose to travel beyond those horizons, attempting to fill the longings and needs for goods barely remembered. They are called Traders. Kid, barely of drinking age in a world that no longer has laws; Par, his half-crazed partner in crime; Freja, the young teen who came between them; and Mary, a little girl in a world that is no longer child safe. They bring supplies, and stories of other places and other survivors. And sometimes they bring hope . . . hope that things are getting better.
