    • TRAIN Z: A Story of War, Resistance, and Survival

When Survival is the Only Option

The horrors of World War II are well-documented, but few stories shed light on the struggles of the Romani people during the Holocaust. In TRAIN Z, David D. Bommarito brings this untold history to life through the gripping tale of Saban and Elisaveta.

A Journey Interrupted – A young couple travels from Sarajevo to Brussels, unaware that their lives are about to change forever.
Captured and Deported – Arrested by the Nazis, they are sent to the Mechelen Transit Camp and forced onto Train Z, a direct route to Auschwitz.
A Daring Escape – In a desperate bid for survival, they join the Belgian Resistance, engaging in dangerous missions that could turn the tide of war.

TRAIN Z is more than a historical novel—it’s a story of resilience, love, and the fight for freedom. It reminds us of the bravery of those who resisted oppression and the sacrifices made for a better future.

BIOGRAPHY
In 2013, I saw a program about the well-guarded 20th train from the Nazi's Mechelen Transit Camp in Brussels to Auschwitz. It was stopped by three Belgian resistance members who helped seventeen Jewish prisoners escape. That program sent me on a quest to research and write a story about Train Z, the only one of 28 tr... ains from the Mechelen Transit Camp to have Romani prisoners onboard. I also wanted to salute the Belgian resistance and the Roma in this book who fought for freedom during World War II. read more
