      • First impressions count. While searching for a new book to read, a catchy title will attract my attention as will a striking, well designed book cover. Can you imagine browsing in a book shop and buying a book with a dull cover and title? Neither can I.

      • A good plot is naturally essential. But realistic, solid characters are also paramount. They are one of the foundations of a good story and the two work in partnership. If you have a great story and weak characters then it won't work and vise versa.

      • Research can be both fun or a real challenge, depending on the subject. It can be difficult to obtain certain information. I do, however, love it when you find a topic that fascinates you and you're lost down a whole new rabbit hole.

      • I think all genres of books are good for kids in school. These days most are available for kids anyway and work well if cleverly written. Reading is good for children and is a key part of the education process.

      • I would say join a writing group on line and get to know other writers/ authors on social media as soon as you can. Most people are incredibly supportive and only too happy to offer advice. I have made a lot of good author friends this way. Always be aware of scammers, though.

      • Gifted authors being turned down by major agents and publishers because they're members of Joe Public, while mediocre authors get publishing deals based on who they know.
