In my opinion, an element that sets good writing apart from generic/boring/amateurish writing is the author's ability, and skill, to paint the vivid picture of an amazing tale. Anyone can tell you how the stars look in the night sky, but only good writing can make you feel like you're actually standing under a dark tent, lit only by pinholes of twinkling twilight.
