Most traditional publishing houses know they take advantage of authors. I received a publishing contract not to long ago. And I took it to my lawyer and he told me the contract was written not in my best interest but in the best interest of the publisher. Although, self-publishing does not get you the exposure you need all the time, it's better than getting ripped off by traditional publishers. Publishing houses know they have the advantage over authors who want their works to go nationwide. Playing on our sense of wanting to be a recognized traditional publisher is most unethical.
