When I first started writing, I would have said that the most important element is a gripping story. Perhaps this came from my childhood background as a reader of 1950s and 60s science fiction, and it was reinforced by the enthusiastic interest of my own young children. I still do believe in the importance of a dynamic story, but the more I write, the more I realize that character development is, if anything, even more important than plot.
