Kahlani Steele Interview On 20, Feb 2026

"Award-winning author Kahlani B. Steele is a talented writer, poet, and educator whose passion for storytelling began when she first read “Anne of Green Gables” by L. M. Montgomery. She debuted with Resilient in 2024 and continued the Iconic Sons MC series with Courageous in 2025, captivating readers with powerful, heartfelt stories."
What inspired you to write the Iconic Sons MC series, and how did the idea for the motorcycle club world first come to you?

I have a deep appreciation for Kristen Ashley’s work. While her characters often embody the 'bad boy’ archetype, I’m interested in exploring a different aspect of their personas by highlighting their softer qualities. Additionally, I always aim to weave in themes of resilience.

Resilient introduces intense emotional themes such as trauma, trust issues, and identity. What compelled you to tell Charly’s story specifically?

Mental health is becoming an increasingly public topic, but there is still much to explore. We can gain valuable insights from each other and from stories like Resilient, which highlight how individuals cope with trauma and its impact on their relationships and daily lives. This was the inspiration behind Resilient.

Courageous focuses heavily on mental health, grief, and self-harm. What kind of research or personal reflection went into writing Clark’s emotional struggles realistically and respectfully?

Much of the narrative is based on my own life experiences and the stories shared by those around me. As a teacher, I work with students and families who are struggling with mental health issues, and I have witnessed the impact this has on children at school.

While I do incorporate elements of embellishment and fiction to enhance excitement and intrigue for the audience, the essence of the story remains authentic.

What message do you hope readers take away from “Courageous” about resilience, healing, and acceptance?

This book is particularly special to me because it delves into the lives of three characters: Clark, Gun, and Vin. Their story explores the complexities of mental health. I wanted to focus on the mindset of the main protagonist, Clark: her emotions, how she handled triggers, and her ability to communicate these feelings to her friends, family, and readers. Through their experiences, I aimed to shed light on the importance of understanding mental health and the various ways people cope with it.

What is your writing process like? Are you more of a plotter who plans everything or a discovery writer who follows the characters?

I usually begin with a general concept or a rough outline in my mind, but I often find myself going in a different direction. I let my characters take the lead and try to put myself in their shoes, asking, "What would I do?"

Can you share any hints about what readers can expect next in the Iconic Sons MC series? Any characters whose stories are coming up?

"Fearless" is the next book in the Iconic Sons MC series, set to be released in late 2026. The story focuses on the lives of Mallory, Gage, and Pen. As a teenager, Mallory was kidnapped by someone she trusted, and this traumatic experience has caused her to guard her heart against love. However, Gage and Pen are determined to break through her defenses.

      • Some of the narrative springs from my own life experiences or the vivid tales shared by those close to me. This personal connection deepens the reader's engagement, allowing them to step into the protagonist's shoes and truly immerse themselves in their emotional mindset. While I incorporate elements of embellishment and fiction to heighten the excitement and intrigue for the audience, the essence of the story remains grounded in genuine authenticity.

      • Publishing a book requires significant financial investment, and writing a novel is not a quick task. It often takes months or even years to prepare a book for publication. After completing your manuscript and numerous revisions, the next step is hiring a professional editor. You also need to consider typesetting, designing the book cover, and marketing. All these aspects require both time and money.

If I could take a year off work to devote entirely to writing, it would be a dream come true. Unfortunately, with a full-time job and daily commitments, I typically find time to write during my downtime.

      • For me, yes. I strive to write each day. However, there are moments when I face the infamous ‘writer’s block,’ where inspiration feels elusive, and I’m unable to choose a direction for my story. On other days, my mind overflows with vivid ideas, compelling me to capture them on the page before they slip away.

      • When readers enjoy my book and leave a positive review, it makes me feel good, not merely because the review is positive, but also because my book has resonated with them in some way. They have connected with my protagonist, which is incredibly uplifting since I write stories that convey a positive message from difficult situations. Hope is a powerful aphrodisiac and can help people move on from adversity and rise above their challenges.

When I receive a negative review, I approach it with an open mind and willingness to learn. While I understand that my writing style may not resonate with everyone, I welcome constructive criticism with an open and eager spirit. In this industry, having thick skin is essential because there will be times when you receive a negative review that is neither constructive nor helpful.
