Daphne Self Interview On 09, Nov 2021

"Editor, marketer, author Daphne Self loves spending her days writing, editing, antiquing, and planning adventures with her husband and sons. Ever since she was a child, she loved making up stories and adventures. She writes about space. She is also an avid reader who devours books in many genres. She enjoys gaming, shopping, relaxing, or exploring."
Where have you spent most of your childhood?

Most of my childhood was spent in the rural county areas of Northern Mississippi.

Who all are a part of your family? How critical are they of your writing?

From my mother to my sons, they were always a part of my writing by being a soundboard for ideas or complications with plots that may have occurred. They have even given me some ideas for future books.

What childhood habit can you never get rid of?

Talking to myself! I run pretend scenarios and conversations through my head and sometimes I'm talking or acting out the scenes, just as I did as a child. Life of an author!!

Which of your childhood dreams was the first to die?

Becoming an astronaut was the first dream to die. I write about space, but the idea of being up there...terrifying!

What is your work schedule like when you are writing?

It's a flip of the switch. When I'm able to sit down and write, I will have a hours long, days long marathon of writing. Then a day or two of editing and tweaking. Then there will be a long spell between the next session.

In what ways do you think your novel, 30 Days: A Devotional Memoir will help the readers?

30 Days deals with the side of life that encounters heartache, divorce, death, widowhood, etc. I use my own experiences to show how I was able to travel through each of those trying times and I hope that this devotional will be able to help others who experience their own rocky paths.

Why did you decide to put your novel, "Into the Unknown" for pre-order?

I wanted to give readers a chance to grab the anthology as soon as it releases. Plus, a pre-order helps show the retailers that people are interested in the book and this helps with retailers carrying other books by me.

How many novels do you plan to write in the series, A Southern Saga?

Until I run out of Southern states! So far I'm looking at 6 more A Southern Saga novels. Four of them will be the continuing story of the Boyette children from Mississippi Nights.

Who inspired the character of firefighter David Boyette in "Mississippi Nights"?

David Boyette was a combination of my late husband, his friends, and the prodigal son. I took aspects from each person and created David, a man who is lovable in a bad-boy way.

When starting to write a novel, how did you know what genre you want to write?

It all starts with the central idea of the story. Will it be about a couple, an assassin; where will it take place; when will it take place.

What do you love the most about writing?

I love to be able to take my idea, my imaginings, and put them onto paper for the world to read. Ever since I was a child, I loved making up stories and adventures. So now I want to share them with the world.

Do you have any unique or quirky writing habits?

I will type out my story, print them out, then read through it to tweak, add, and edit, then return back to the computer. Throughout all this, I create character cards so that I can envision my characters.

What did being an author mean to you as a child? What does it mean to you now?

As a child, being an author was a dream. Now it is a dream come true, but definitely a tough dream to achieve! There is a lot of work that goes into being an author, from writing, editing, marketing, and continuing producing content. Yet I love it!

What are you currently working on? May we know when we can expect a new book?

I am working on three projects: Carolina Sunrise: A Southern Saga; Georgia Dawn: A Southern Saga; and What Legends Become: Book 2 of The Juliet Files.

I will have a new book releasing early next year, When Legends Rise: Book 1 of the Juliet Files.

What are your thoughts on AllAuthor? Is this a website you see yourself using for sometime even in the future?

I love AllAuthor. The interactions with readers, the opportunities, and the many perks of being a member are great. I actually encourage fellow authors to join.

Mindfire was a captivating superhero book. It's uniqueness lay in the way Allen Steadham was able to portray the human nature of each person. Superhero, supervillain...each had vices and virtues.

Jordan's World brought to life a different way of viewing the possibility of alien life. And when the human world collides with an alien world, various cultures collide. Great worldbuilding and endearing characters.

As the second novel of the Algoran series, I was totally held captive by Jordan and her tribe. To watch as Ericka grows into adulthood and the difficulties faced by Jordan kept me engrossed in the story until the very end.

This is probably my favorite book to date. Beroan was the most endearing character, the epitome of selfless sacrifice. Nsi--I could feel her pain and hope. This is definitely new take on the world of shape-shifting.

Heart-pounding, page-turning....this book took me from one pulse-racing scene to another. The characters were complex and the world building so detailed it felt I was there by their side as I read their story.

As a short story, this book packed a wallop. It was eye-opening to see how Jared became a Hunter and what was stripped from him, only to be regained later on by Radon.

      • I feel as though today's generation is less aware, which is sad; because with the literary arts, be it classic or modern, you will see the facets of humanity portrayed, and it gives the reader a better understanding of the world.

      • The cover should always have elements of the story, and the title should be legible. The trends and such should not be worried about since trends and fads die. You want the cover to be timeless. As for the title, it shouldn't be long and it should be genre appropriate.
