Over the Peanut Fence.
by Marilynne EichingerGeneral Nonfiction Book Overview
How does a disenfranchised youth living on the streets for four years find success? What are the obstacles for all homeless youth and how can they be mediated? Who are the heroes who help them?
My partner Ray and I adopted a twenty-year-old boy who had lived on the streets for four years. When we took him into our home, we embarked on a rocky journey that lasted longer than we ever imagined. In Over the Peanut Fence: Scaling Barriers to Homeless and Runaway Youths, I share his story as it unfolded and how it affected all three of us. His tale is used throughout the manuscript to explain difficulties youths have in overcoming traumatic childhood experiences. Also included are interviews with social agency personnel who, often having overcome their own dysfunctional beginnings, chose a career working with maladjusted children. They share what it is like to live on the firing line.
