In the autumn of 1955, ten people gather at Owlwood Manor in Suffolk for a house party – a ‘long weekend’.Within twenty-four hours, two of the party are dead. One of the deaths is clearly an accident. The other, as there is a suspicion that strychnine might have been involved, could be a case of suicide, but is unlikely to be accidental. The local Chief Constable, conscious of the status of the titled host and his guests, plays safe by asking Scotland Yard to investigate even before the post mortem examination confirms strychnine.
Chief Superintendent Bryce and Inspector Lomax travel to Owlwood. Before leaving London, Bryce was aware that, while studying at Cambridge before the war, he had known both the host and hostess. He thought that problem could be obviated. What he didn’t discover, until after he had arrived in the remote corner of Suffolk, was that house guests were present. Even if he had known, he could never have anticipated that he was also acquainted with four of them.
