Set in early 19th century Kimberton, Pennsylvania, A Specter of Truth tells the story of Lizzie Mitchell, a rural farmgirl with an aspiration of becoming a teacher. Breaking through the social barrier of a career that was typical only for men and few, if any, colleges that admitted women, Lizzie’s dream would not have been possible were it not for the vision of Emmor Kimber. The entrepreneurial Quaker and his wife, Susanna, established the French Creek Boarding School for Girls in 1818 in the village that now bears his name.
A Specter of Truth is a poignant narrative that chronicles Lizzie’s coming of age over the span of 7 years. Rich in history, the tale reminds us of the challenges, hardships, and sorrows of the men and women who forged their way in a new republic. Lizzie learns the importance of friendship, love, and steadfastness, as she advances to womanhood with courage and strength.
