The Artemis Adventure
by Dorothy Rice BennettPublish: Jan 16, 2018LGBT Book Overview
When life is depressing where you are, Kiki Rodriguez believes, it's time to move on. Her papa drinks, her mama and papa fight, her brother Raul is in prison, and Javier is headed the same way. Her papa says that now she's eighteen, she has to pay rent. Yet there's a recession and no jobs. Kiki senses that her dream of going to college is quickly fading away.
A "Heinz-57" mix of Polish, Puerto Rican and Filipino, Kiki spends hot, humid summer nights stretched out on the roof of her apartment building talking to her favorite star, one she has named "Artemis," after the Greek goddess who once roamed the forest as an archer--strong, independent, and accompanied by her faithful hunting dog.
Looking up at Artemis one August evening, Kiki concludes that it's definitely time to go. Throwing a few belongings into a duffle bag, she leaves a note for her family, swallows her fear and hikes to the nearest subway station. Following her star, Kiki begins an amazing adventure that allows her to fulfill her dreams while growing up, coming out, and falling in love.
Humorous, touching, and inspiring, THE ARTEMIS ADVENTURE is Dorothy Rice Bennett's third novel, following NORTH COAST: A Contemporary Love Story in 2015 and GIRLS ON THE RUN in 2016.
