Since moving to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, junior Shannon Colfax and her autistic twin brother Shane have had a difficult time settling into their new school. When a feud erupts between Shannon and popular football jock Brent Duray after he bullies Shane, she finds an unlikely savior—and new love—in Brent’s friend, Cody Williams.
Stung by Cody's betrayal, Brent and his entourage devise a retaliation plan: if Shannon and Cody can survive the infamous Paulding Light Challenge by spending a whole night in the forest, Duray promises to leave Shane alone. Desperate for vindication, Shannon and Cody take the dare to put the jock in his place. As they hike through the Ottawa National Forest in search of the "ghostly" train engineer that supposedly haunts the woods, they wander off the path, only to discover a dead Ojibwa man—and proof of something more sinister.
Shannon and Cody gather as much evidence as they can to share with Cody's father, the county sheriff. But, their snooping sets off a whirlwind of panic, and they find themselves embroiled in dangerous game of cat and mouse with the real “spirits”. With the help of Shane’s savant computer skills, they discover an intricately woven web of lies and deceit, and the three friends are kidnapped. Can the Spirits of the Northwoods help guide the teens safely home so they can finally reveal the truth?
