Emma Shaw, newspaper and part time crime scene photographer, returns to her small Blue Ridge Mountain home in North Carolina to bury her big brother, Early Shaw, the town’s Chief of Police who died in a mysterious accident. When the facts don’t add up for Emma, she decides to buck the hometown hierarchy and look into the matter herself. Emma navigates the difficult task of investigating her brother’s death while the Shaw Family, long time town benefactors and owners of most of the businesses in town, try to cover up what really happened to Early. Suspects are many and leads end in frustration as Emma grapples with untangling her past from the present under the shadow of Black Mountain. Emma possesses a mystical ability handed down from Cherokee ancestors to read the energy auras that surround most people. Emma uses this ability to help solve the case of her dead brother. Emma discovers one important benefit of being able to read auras is when a person’s aura appears around them in a dark pink color, a sign the person is lying to her.
