Research, attention to detail, and not to rush. Double check facts and make sure there is a consistent pattern in what you're writing. Confusing the reader is a sure way to get bad reviews or no sales.
I've come out with a little more edge in my writing. My characters tend to do and say what they feel whereas I probably wouldn't do or say such things.
